At Atlanta, Georgia's Morehouse College, Jarvis began his journey. He earned a biology bachelor's degree from Morehouse in 2016 and graduated with honors.
One of the most memorable experiences of His time at Morehouse was the summer of 2013, when he had the chance to take part in the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. He spent his internship observing many doctors at Yale's Hospital and interacting with coworkers who all had the same goal in mind: to use medicine to improve the world and the lives of others. This chance fueled His desire to pursue medicine.
Jarvis continued to pursue his medical passion after Morehouse and started working professionally in the industry. He accepted a position as an Emergency Room Scribe for Methodist Charlton Medical Center & Methodist Dallas Medical Center in July 2017 as a result of his strong performance on the Medical College Admissions Test. His devotion to emergency medicine was cultivated as a result of this experience.
Jarvis graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Howard University College of Medicine in May 2022. During his time at Howard, he spent two years as the SNMA (Student National Medical Association) fundraising chair and formed lifelong relationships with his classmates. Additionally, during his three years at Howard, he held a number of positions on the Emergency Medicine Student Association (EMSA) executive board. Currently, Jarvis is a first-year resident in emergency medicine at Parkland Hospital and UT-Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
Jarvis believes that God has purposefully planned his journey and that he is carrying out God's will. Due to his passion for medicine, He intends to use his medical degree to do more than just well. His commitment going forward is to keep helping those in his community and servicing patients who are frequently the least, the last, and the excluded.
Dr. Garner looks forward to treating every patient, regardless of their capacity to pay for medical expenses, whether it be various complex diseases or the unpredictable that bring patients through the doors.
"I'm extremely humbled and honored to be on the board of advisors because I believe it's pivotal to show diverse representation in medicine. I'm a firm believer in you can't accomplish it until you see it so providing that mentorship and guidance is pivotal. The world needs more Black and Brown physicians to ensure that all patients, specifically from underserved communities receive adequate, compassionate and efficient care." - Dr. Jarvis Garner
